と・・言う事で、年末年始にはクリスマスカードや年賀状の交換をするのですが、この時期になると決まって一部で盛り上がる(?)話題のひとつが以下のようなテーマです。
・Happy New Year or A Happy New Year.
・A Happy New Year は間違い？
幾つかのサイトでは、Nativeや長期海外在住の日本人が不定冠詞の"A"を付すのは間違いだと断定したり、それに対する反論も出たりして盛り上がっています。
自分はNativeではありませんが、結論から言えば以下のようなイメージを持っています。
・Happy New Year が普通。Good Morningなどと同じ。
・しかし、A Happy New Year が一部の人々が主張するような
"恥ずかしい間違い"とは思えない。
年賀状は日本の物なので海外からは12月中にSeason's Greetingが届くのですが、そこでは大抵が
Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. となっています。一部の人々が主張する"Happy New Year = あけましておめでとう。A Happy New Year = よいお年を。"と言う区別の仕方とも一致する様でもありますが、これも今ひとつピンと来ない気がします。
また事実として、ざっと今年の分を確認したところ、新たな発見(?)もありました。
・日本人以外から来ているものは全て Happy New Year で、A Happy New Year はゼ ロ。
・しかし、純粋な"Happy New Year"以外の場合は不定冠詞が付いている。

もしかして・・・・"Happy Birthday","Good Morning","Happy New Year"等のように決まり文句として定着し、認知もされている言葉群は、前後の"I wish you ~" とか"～to you"を省略した形で不定冠詞からも独立した使用法が通例化しているが、そこまで一般化していない言葉群は"I wish you~"などは省略される場合でも不定冠詞は残る場合もあると言う仮説も成り立ちます。
そもそもですね・・・
少なくとも一部の主張に有るほどにはNative一般が、"A Happy New Year"と書かれたり言われたりして強い違和感を持つと言う事は無いでしょう。Native一般と書いたのは、一部のサイト等に意見を寄せているNativeの方々の多くは英語教師として日本に来ているような言語学や英文法の専門家なのではないかと推察するからです。
休暇中なので若干名だけ親しい米人に"A Happy New Yearって変かな？"と質問しましたが、全員が"I don't really care","That doesn't matter"でした。
これまた休暇中なので自分の書棚やCDラックもチェックしてみましたが、これも面白い結果となりました。

－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－と言う事で、やはり不定冠詞の"A"は無い方が自然かと思いますが、あったら教養が疑われるような恥ずべき間違いであると言うのも間違いではないかと改めて思う次第です。
